Astronomically the Sun actually passes through 13 constellations along the ecliptic — the classic 12 plus Ophiuchus. The IAU locked in the official boundaries back in 1930, and once you factor in ~2,000 years of Earth’s axial precession, the dates no longer line up with the traditional tropical signs most of us know.
